The following is a selection from Brandon Katz of Parrot Analytics.

While drama's long been the most popular genre for shows on streaming services, smaller genres are starting to grab a large share of demand. Data from Parrot Analytics breaks down the quarterly shifts by share of top 100 original streaming shows in the U.S.

  • At 45.5% in Q3 2024, drama has dipped to one of its lowest rates since the start of 2022 – though in Q4 of last year, drama made up more than half of the top original streaming shows.
  • The lower number for drama is less a product of that genre's decline, though, and more about smaller genres like fantasy, reality and in particular, animation, rising.
  • Animation is rarely present among the top genres, yet grabs 4% of the top 100 here after not being present at all since late last year. While animation is time-consuming, it's usually still cheaper to produce than live-action movies and shows, so the recent rise could hint at studio strategy adjustments.
