Netflix Still Winning With Competitors' Content

As Netflix continues growing, its enormous scale enables a wider array of audiences to discover and enjoy pre-existing TV titles than other streamers would. This applies to licensed shows like Breaking Bad (AMC), Suits (USA Network) and Your Honor (Showtime), as well as cancelled linear series that Netflix revived to impressive success, including YouLucifer and Manifest

  • According to Parrot Analytics, licensed programming accounts for nearly three-fourths of Netflix’s global TV demand — and has even increased slightly since the new year began — compared to Netflix’s TV originals (29.58%).
  • Recent business downturns around streaming on a wider scale meant media companies went back to licensing titles to Netflix, which benefits both parties for now. But it's unlikely to continue if other owned services reach consistent profitability.
  • Netflix has leaned on originals in the past to deal with declines in licensed programming. However, if that occurs again, it's more likely the streaming giant leans on sports and advertising this time around.
