Is Animation An Ace Up Netflix's Sleeve?
The following is a selection from Brandon Katz of Parrot Analytics.
Part of Netflix's future successes may be dictated by its sneaky-sucessful animation titles. Data from Parrot Analytics reveals how animation titles have grown by share of consumption across the streaming giant's various geographies.
- In APAC alone, animation consumption grew by more than 50% on Netflix from Q2 2023 to Q4 2024.
- In LATAM, the growth was even larger from Q1 to Q4 2024 – which Parrot highlights as Netflix's typically weakest market by net subscribers – with animation consumption taking off like a rocket over the last four quarters.
- Animation's success, however, isn't necessarily leaning on its own outputs (though those are there as well) – but instead, it's primarily licensed kids programming that audiences could also potentially watch elsewhere.
- Parrot also shares that regionality is a key aspect here; even if animation isn't fueling explosive growth in U.S./Canada markets (where subscriptions have plateaued due to market penetration anyway), there's still room for it to power subscription increases elsewhere.
