Q1 2025 was incredibly newsworthy, but globally, average article engagement time actually decreased slightly, according to newly-released data from Chartbeat. Each quarter, Chartbeat takes a deep dive on global audience insights, showcasing readership trends across geographies that show larger shifts in behaviors, and how some adjustments can be focused on specific geographies.

  • While average engagement time dipped in many areas – notably, Latin America (down 4.4 seconds), the Middle East (down 2.9 seconds) and Africa (down 2.3 seconds) – there were other geographies that stayed steady or even increased.
  • Central/Eastern Europe saw 0.2 more seconds of engagement time on average, while North America saw 1.1 more seconds of engagement time relative to Q4 2024 (something you could infer comes from the new presidential administration in the U.S.).
  • Central/Eastern Europe and the Middle East are still the top geographic areas by average engagement time, and are considerably higher than the rest of the world's figures there; however, jumps for Africa and Latin America show more geographic regions growing overall engagement time into that 30-plus second range.
