Does Apple TV+ Need More Genre Variation?
The following is a selection from Brandon Katz of Parrot Analytics.
Apple TV+ has had plenty of popular titles during its limited life cycle, but the raw number of titles pales in comparison to a competitor like Netflix. Data from Parrot Analytics shows that Netflix's library is actually 4000% larger than Apple TV+'s. That, on its own, doesn't have to harm Apple. But there's another factor at play: Apple's smaller library is increasingly centering on a handful of genres.
- Parrot data found that in Q3 2024, 16.1% of Apple TV+'s U.S. catalog was drama, while 12.1% comedy and 7.9% was fantasy – so over a third baked into three genres.
- Where Apple has been able to succeed, in part, is by winning with originals; Parrot shows it has the third-highest originals demand share behind Netflix (towering, at 36.2%) and Amazon Prime Video (9.4%).
- Not captured specifically here, however, is live sports where Apple has been able to make investments like Friday Night Baseball and MLS Season Pass – both of which drive at least some audience demand and help reduce churn in ways that limited series can't.
