The following is a selection from Brandon Katz of Parrot Analytics.

Every streaming service is invested in movies, to some extent, but of late, it's become a two-horse race there in the U.S. Parrot Analytics data looks at Q4 2024 numbers to reveal how much Amazon Prime Video and Netflix lead competitors there in terms of the size of their respective movie catalogs compared to their total content library.

  • In Q1 2024, Netflix (25.5%) and Prime Video (25.3%) were essentially neck-and-neck by share of catalog dedicated to movies, but since then, Amazon's number ballooned to 37.3%.
  • Movie share also dropped for services like Hulu (down from 10.4% to 8.2%) and Max (11.1% to 7.5%), adding to the substantial lead for the likes of Amazon.
  • As Parrot details, the surge from Prime Video comes via new theatrical deals with studios like Lionsgate, in part to get ahead of the loss of Universal Pictures titles.
  • It also helps that Amazon has its own studio, of course, with MGM – and films were also contributing 36% of subscriber revenue to Amazon Prime Video from Q1-Q3 2024 (according to Parrot Analytics Streaming Economics).
