Anime streaming service Crunchyroll (owned by Sony) has defied norms in a sea of consolidation. Since 2021, Crunchyroll has tripled its global subscribers, and also has a stranglehold on both supply and demand for Japanese animation on American streaming services – as data from Parrot Analytics showcases.

  • In Q2 2024, Crunchyroll boasted 98.3% of demand share for Japanese animation in the U.S., and 97.3% of supply share.
  • Hulu is next-closest despite being significantly far behind at 14.4% and 14.5% shares, respectively.
  • Crunchyroll's strengths come from a combination of factors like longevity, depth of catalog (Crunchyroll plus Funimation content), hyper-targeting to a passionate and niche audience, and extending itself to in-person experiences as well.
